Following the completion of the University of Notre Dame Law School, I returned to my hometown of Burlington, Vermont. I am proud to have served the Vermont community for over 30 years as a prosecutor, defense attorney and judge.

Vermont Superior Court Judge

1999 to 2011

•Treated individuals from every level of society in a fair, just and equal manner.
•Explained complex issues in an understandable manner to juries, litigants, victims and others involved in the court system.
•Analyzed complex information, principles and arguments and issued timely decisions.
•Balanced the interests of competing individuals, professionals and organizations in a highly emotional, time limited environment.
•Presided over the state’s only juvenile drug and treatment court which coordinates a team of treatment providers with a focus on weekly, individual contacts with juveniles in need.

Private Practice

1983 to 1999

•Worked with widely varied clients to develop strategies to achieve the clients’ goals in a cost efficient manner. •Helped, counseled and represented hundreds of individuals involved in emotional wrenching family matters such as divorce, parentage, parental rights, child support and juvenile cases.
•Represented hundreds of individuals charged with crimes, both federal and state.
•Maintained an extensive civil practice representing individuals in litigation before the courts and regulatory agencies.

State’s Attorney Office

1977 to 1983

•Served as chief law enforcement officer for Chittenden County responsible for prosecuting all state criminal cases for the county.
•Personally prosecuted thousands of criminal cases including first degree murder, sexual assault, robbery and drug distribution.
